The Roswell Museum Federal Art Center

Other Art Centers

Collaboration also took place with other community art centers in New Mexico, with one of the most active being in Melrose, a small town of about 600 inhabitants located roughly 100 miles northeast of Roswell. Directed by Martha Kennedy, the Melrose Art Center boasted an active class schedule and attendance numbers that were consistently higher than Rowell’s throughout 1937 and 1938.

Given their relative proximity to one another, the two centers regularly shared materials and collaborated on different projects. The Roswell Museum supplied some of the Melrose Art Center’s furniture, for instance, while Melrose oversaw the creation of a hooked rug for the Roswell stage. The Roswell Museum also hosted lectures and performances from other arts-related organizations, including the Federal Writers Project and the Federal Music Project.
