Hello! I’m Sara Woodbury, PhD, an interdisciplinary researcher and curator dedicated to expanding how museums define and enable access to art. My scholarly work considers how museums use traveling exhibitions and other mobile, collections-based interventions to expand their audiences. I completed my Ph.D. in American Studies at William & Mary in 2024, with my dissertation analyzing art outreach exhibitions in the United States during the twentieth century. I am currently Curator of Art at the Barry Art Museum at Old Dominion University, and have previously held curatorial positions at the Roswell Museum in New Mexico, Shelburne Museum in Vermont, and the Dallas Museum of Art. Throughout my museum career, I’ve interpreted an eclectic range of material culture as art, including dolls, robots, and new media.

In addition to my academic and curatorial work, I maintain an artistic practice that considers the intersections between time, change, and the sense of place. I work in several media, including painting, printmaking, ceramics, and sketching.
